How do I listen to
online radio stations?
Most stations
use streaming mp3 technology. In order to get the best experience, a broadband connection is recommended.
We understand that for some people, internet
radio isn't something they have explored, especially those new to a broadband connection like DSL or cable modem service.
Below are some suggested pieces of software
that are freely available for playing most stations listed on our site. Please understand, there are many different players.
We will cover the ones recommeded for using our website.
Microsoft Windows Users:
Most users on a modern version of Microsoft
Windows have a player already built in called Windows Media Player. Many of the stations listed on our site use the Windows
Media Player as the format to stream music online because most users already have it on their PC. If you do not have Windows
Media Player already on your PC you can download it for free from Microsoft.
TIP: Check to make sure you have the newest
version, Windows Media Player 11. The new version is an all-in-one media player that provides the best experience for
playing and using your digital entertainment on Windows based PCs and a wide choice of portable devices.
If you want to download the latest
version of Windows Media Player for free click here.
Macintosh Users:
Most radio stations are able to stream
music on a Macintosh. All modern versions of the Mac OS X operating system have Apple iTunes pre-installed. If you have
a PC that is a few years old, make sure you upgrade to version 6 or later. If you need to download the latest version
of iTunes click here.
What type of internet connection do I
need?
Anything from a dial-up 56k modem connection
to the highest of broadband connections can easily enjoy radio stations online. However, if you want the best results, you
should have a broadband connection. If you need specifics, at least a 144k connection to the internet for the broadband stream.
Why Do I Hear Silence?
Have you have downloaded Microsoft Windows Media
Player but you still hear silence? Make sure your computer speakers are connected to your pc, the power to your
speakers is turned on and the volume on both the speakers and in your computer's control panel is turned up to the appropriate
level.
If you only have problems hearing specific stations
there could be several causes.
Most stations are open 24 hours but not all. Some stations
may be off the air for a few hours at night.
At times radio stations have technical difficulties
that need to be fixed. Typically, stations are back on the air within 48 hours when they experience these down
times.
Radio stations are tightly regulated in some countries.
Because there are some questions regarding the legality of broadcasting commercials online some US stations have decided to
broadcast silence online during commercial breaks. If you hear silence at times on some stations, especially stations
owned by Clear Channel, that might be why.
Cell Phones
Soon new technologies will allow
us to stream high quality music over even less bandwidth. As a result, in the near future cell phones are going
to be able to play internet radio stations. When you purchase your next cell phone make sure it is a 3G cell
phone that is capable of streaming mp3.
Other Media Players
A few of the stations listed on our site stream in a
format that requires RealPlayer software. If you would like to download the RealPlayer media player click the icon
